ABOUT THE WEBINAR


The webinar with renowned oncologists Prof Charles Mullighan (St Jude Children's Research Hospital, USA) and Assoc Prof Allen Yeoh (National University Hospital, Singapore) provides an overview of the current molecular taxonomy of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

This webinar reviews the currently accepted genetic subtypes, the type of genetic alterations that define each, associations with disease behavior, age, and prognosis. Implications for mechanisms of leukemogenesis and therapeutic intervention are also presented.

Dr. Mullighan is the deputy director of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center. In this leadership role, he helps guide precision medicine, preclinical and other strategic research initiatives for the center, which is the nation’s first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children.

Mullighan has been at St. Jude since 2004 and has held many roles. In 2008, he joined the St. Jude Department of Pathology. He holds the William E. Evans Endowed Chair and serves as medical director of the St. Jude Biorepository and co-leader of the Cancer Center’s Hematological Malignancies Program. In his role as deputy director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Mullighan oversees five cross-disciplinary, multi-departmental programs aligned to specific diseases and research concepts: Developmental Biology and Solid Tumor, Neurobiology and Brain Tumor, Hematological Malignancies, Cancer Control and Survivorship, and Cancer Biology. The Cancer Center supports nine centralized, state-of-the-art shared resources to facilitate the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of research.

Viva-Goh Foundation Associate Professor​

Viva-Goh Foundation Associate Professor Allen Yeoh is a Senior Consultant and Associate Professor in Division f Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, Khoo Teck Puat-National University Children's Medical Institute, NUH and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. He trained in NUS and NUH and obtained his clinical and research fellowship in St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

A/Prof Allen Yeoh's interest is in childhood leukaemia. He is currently the principal investigator of the multi-centre Malaysia-Singapore ALL and AML trials competitively funded by NMRC and A*STAR/Singapore Cancer Syndicate. Currently these trials have been highly successful with > 80% and >60% projected cure. He is the first Singapore doctor to receive the American Society of Haematology Merit Award for his pioneering work in gene expression profiling in leukaemia. This work was one of the highest cited article in this field for 2003.

A/Prof Yeoh is also the recipient of numerous National and International Awards including Singapore Youth Award 2002, NUS Office of Life Sciences Award 2002, Asian Innovation Award (Gold) 2003, the NMRC-BMRC Clinician Scientist Award from 2005 to date, the NUHS-Mokhtar Riady Pinnacle Award 2013 (Translational Research Innovator Award) and the National Medical Excellence Awards 2014 (National Outstanding Clinician Scientist Award).
